Raiders scouting report

Raiders vs Kansas City

Published: Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 - 12:00 am | Page 10C

THE PARTICULARS

• Time: 1:15 p.m.

• Line: Raiders by three.

• Records: Raiders 3-8, Chiefs 1-10.

• TV: Ch. 13; Bill Macatee (play-by-play), Steve Beuerlein (color).

• Radio: KHTK (1140 AM), KSFO (560 AM). Greg Papa (play-by-play), Tom Flores (color).

• Why watch?: The Raiders seek their first winning streak of the season and first season sweep against the Chiefs since 2001. After struggling to score touchdowns for more than three games, the Raiders' offense scored three last week. The Chiefs are weak defensively, so the points could keep coming.

• Rewind: Darren McFadden had his best rushing day as a pro with 164 yards in the Raiders' 23-8 win at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 14. McFadden ran for his first career touchdown, as did Michael Bush, who rushed for a season-high 90 yards. The Raiders ran for a season-high 300 yards.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell vs. Chiefs free safety Jarrad Page

As Russell becomes more comfortable in the passing game, he needs to be wary of Page, who has hurt the Raiders in the past. Page has four interceptions (three in the end zone) in five games against the Raiders. When Russell looks to throw down the field, Page will be looking for more interceptions.

WHO'S THE MAN?

Kirk Morrison

RAIDERS MIDDLE LINEBACKER

If the Chiefs run a lot of no-huddle offense, it will be up to Morrison to ensure the Raiders are in the right defense. Morrison is one of the NFL's better linebackers in pass coverage, and he will be vital if Kansas City tries to keep the Raiders off balance with quick passes.

RAIDERS THREE KEYS

• The defense is coming off one of its best performances in limiting Denver to 10 points last week. The key was the play of the revamped secondary and the defensive line. The Raiders had no sacks last week but disrupted the Broncos' passing game rhythm.

• JaMarcus Russell is in the best stretch of his young career, completing 76 percent of his passes with a touchdown and no turnovers in two games since returning from a knee injury.

• Johnnie Lee Higgins has returned punts for touchdowns in each of the last two games, ending nearly a five-year drought for the Raiders. Justin Miller handles kickoff returns, and the Raiders' last one for a touchdown was Dec. 28, 2003.

CHIEFS THREE KEYS

• Tight end Tony Gonzalez hoped to be traded to a contender but was not. So he has been a reliable target for quarterback Tyler Thigpen, as he has been for other Chiefs quarterbacks. Gonzalez is coming off his 25th career 100-yard receiving game, the most by a tight end in NFL history.

• Larry Johnson has had a lot of success against the Raiders, but struggles on and off the field have limited him this season. He's missed four games this season because off-field problems, including a one-game suspension.

• The Chiefs traded one of the NFL's best pass rushers in Jared Allen and have struggled to replace his production. Kansas City ranks last with six sacks.
