Boys ignite fire with fireworks

ROSEVILLE – The Fire Department's recent stern warnings about the unsafe use of fireworks apparently didn't reach two boys.

The youngsters are believed to have set off fireworks and started a small grass fire about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in Mahany Park, near Pleasant Grove and Sun City boulevards, said police spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther.

A resident heard a popping sound, saw flames flare and observed the two boys, who appeared to be about 10 years old, riding away on bicycles, Gunther said.

Roseville firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and found burnt fireworks at the scene, she said.

The two boys were not found, Gunther said.

Fire Marshal Dennis Mathisen said the blaze was another reminder why people need to be careful with fireworks, and why unsupervised children should not have access to them.

"It is extremely dangerous to misuse fireworks, especially this year when conditions are so dry," he said.
