Judge to rule July 28 on nanny charges

Published: Friday, Jul. 04, 2008 | Page 2B

AUBURN – Placer Superior Court Judge Robert P. McElhany announced Thursday that he will rule July 28 whether to dismiss charges against Veronica Martinez Salcedo, a nanny accused of shaking a baby, causing her death from a brain injury.

The case twice has ended in hung juries.

Defense attorney Mary Beth Action sought dismissal after a prosecutor requested time to decide whether to seek a third trial against Martinez Salcedo, who is accused in the death of 16-month-old Hannah Rose Juceam of Roseville.

Prosecutor Jeff Wood said a physician needed to review evidence presented in the second trial by a medical expert for the defense.

Hannah became unresponsive May 11, 2006, while Martinez Salcedo was baby-sitting her. She died two days later.
