Roseville police have arrested two men on suspicion of trying to steal a catalytic converter from a Toyota 4Runner.
The removal and theft of catalytic converters from Toyota sport utility vehicles has been a rampant crime in the Sacramento region as thieves try to sell them as scrap metal, authorities have said.
Roseville police spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther said her department received two calls from neighbors on Main Street near Atkinson Street shortly after 3 a.m. Friday. Each reported seeing two men walking or running in the area, she said.
When an officer arrived, he noticed two feet sticking out from under the Toyota in a driveway on Atkinson Street, Gunther said. A wrench was found attached to the catalytic converter under the vehicle, she said.
The officer arrested Xeng Vue, 32, of Sacramento on suspicion of attempted grand theft, conspiracy and possession of burglar's tools, she said.
Another man, Siong Lee Vang, 42, also of Sacramento, was found sitting in a nearby vehicle and was arrested on suspicion of burglary and conspiracy, Gunther said.
Both men later were released from jail on a citation to appear in court, she said.
