Officials for Cal Fire in Placer County said they are continuing to investigate a fire that last week consumed a barn and killed a 55-year-old woman who lived in an adjacent trailer.
Cal Fire spokeswoman Gina Chamberlin said preliminary indications are that the Feb. 19 fire was accidental and started in the trailer. The barn and trailer were on Gold Hill Road near Wise Road in the Ophir area.
Witnesses to the 5:30 p.m. blaze reported they heard an explosion and rushed to the trailer to help the woman out, Chamberlin said.
The victim, Carolyn Grace Gallamore, had second- and third-degree burns to about half her body and was taken by helicopter to the burn unit at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Chamberlin said. She died the following day, Chamberlin said.
Bales of hay inside the barn fueled the flames, which also destroyed the trailer, she said.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the explosion, which occurred inside the trailer and is believed to have started the blaze, Chamberlin said.
