Placer County Assessor Bruce Dear issued a reminder today that citizens do not have to pay a fee to file a homeowner's exemption claim form if they go directly through his office.
In recent weeks, county homeowners have been receiving advertisements from independent companies who charge for providing the owner with a completed exemption claim form to be filed with the assessor, the office noted.
Dear said the private companies are not affiliated with his office, nor is there a requirement that these companies' services be used to file the claim.
Dear said property owners can file a claim at no charge if they contact the assessor's office and request an application for the exemption.
Information can be obtained by calling the Placer County Assessor's Office at (530) 889-4300 or visiting the county's Web site at www.placer.ca.gov and clicking on "departments" at the top and selecting "assessor" from the drop-down menu.
