49ers scouting report: 49ers vs. New York Jets

Published: Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008 - 12:00 am | Page 12C

• Time: 1:05 p.m.

• The line: Jets by 3 1/2.

• Records: 49ers 4-8; Jets 8-4.

• TV: Ch. 13. Phil Simms (color), Jim Nantz (play-by-play).

• Radio: KFBK (1530 AM), KNBR (680 AM). Joe Starkey (play-by-play), Gary Plummer (color).

• Why watch? To see Brett Favre, who is in the midst of a fairy tale season with the Jets. Favre has lost just once in Candlestick Park – in January 1999 when Terrell Owens caught a last-second touchdown pass in the playoffs to knock off Favre's Packers.

• Rewind: The 49ers jumped out to a 14-3 halftime lead in 2004, thanks to a quick start by quarterback Tim Rattay. But Jets running back Curtis Martin scored twice in the fourth quarter, propelling New York to a 22-14 win in East Rutherford, N.J.

WHO'S THE MAN?

Mike Singletary

49ERS COACH

Last week's road win over Buffalo in bad weather has seemingly everyone rooting for Singletary to keep his job in 2009. Will people still be rooting after today? The Jets are coming off an embarrassing loss and need a win in San Francisco to keep pace in the competitive AFC East.

49ERS THREE KEYS

• Adam Snyder will start at right tackle. But look for a healthy Barry Sims to get some snaps at the position, too. This game essentially is an audition: Whoever plays better gets the starting job next week.

• What to do at punt returner? Injuries to Allen Rossum, Arnaz Battle and Nate Clements have the 49ers grasping for candidates at this precarious position.

• Quarterback Shaun Hill had another heady performance last week against Buffalo. His play largely will determine whether coach Mike Singletary keeps his job. Whether Singletary keeps his job, in turn, has a big bearing on Hill's role next season.

JETS THREE KEYS

• Brett Favre has a reputation as a river-boat gunslinger who often fires off questionable passes. So far this season, however, he has a 68.7 completion percentage, the best in the NFL.

• One of the recent story lines in New York has been the emergence of rookie tight end Dustin Keller, who has developed a nice rapport with Favre. Keller has 27 receptions in the last five games.

• It's hard to imagine a team with a bigger defensive disparity than the Jets. They rank fourth in the league against the run but 30th against the pass.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

49ers center Eric Heitmann vs. Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins

A week ago, Denver center Casey Wiegmann handled Jenkins as the Broncos ran rough-shod on the Jets' defense. It was news because no one had been able to control Jenkins, a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year, all season. At midweek, Jenkins was still fuming about that game, which does not bode well for the 49ers' offensive line. Jenkins will be matched up against the 49ers' best lineman in Heitmann, who is among the biggest centers in the league. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz added a little extra intrigue to this matchup recently when he called Heitmann the best center he's ever coached in the NFL.
