More than one of every four Sacramento-area residents speaks a language other than English at home, according to the latest census figures.
That gives the four-county region far more linguistic diversity than the nation as a whole.
Six languages are spoken at home in Sacramento by at least 1 percent of the population: Spanish; Russian; Hmong; Vietnamese; Tagalog and Chinese. Nationwide, only two languages - Spanish and Chinese - are spoken at home by more than 1 percent of the population.
All told, about 530,000 of the region's residents speak a language other than English at home, a number roughly equivalent to the entire population of the city of Sacramento.
