The NBA announced Monday Kings center DeMarcus Cousins has been suspended for Wednesday’s season finale against the Phoenix Suns for being assessed his 16th technical foul of the season.
Under NBA rules, a player is automatically suspended for a game once he reaches 16 technical fouls. Cousins, who led the NBA with 16 technical fouls last season, is the league leader this season.
Cousins picked up his 16th technical foul with 1:13 left in Sunday’s win against Minnesota.
Cousins waved his hand in protest at referee J.T. Orr and said something that caught Orr’s attention and drew the technical foul.
Cousins’ only chance to play Wednesday would have been if the NBA rescinded the technical foul. The NBA had not rescinded a technical foul against Cousins all season, but did in the previous two seasons which helped Cousins avoid suspensions.
Cousins finishes the season averaging 22.7 points and 11.7 rebounds.
