Republic FC: Shot at title lives on with draw
Though Republic FC outshoots Arizona United SC 23-6 and has 10 corner kicks, the result is a scoreless draw. While frustrating for the Republic players, coaches and fans among the announced sellout of 11,424, the result doesn’t kill Republic FC’s bid to win the USL Western Conference championship.
Sac State football: Hornets fall 32-14 to Weber State
Sacramento State sees its scoreless streak reach seven quarters and loses 32-14 to Weber State in Ogden, Utah. Quarterback Daniel Kniffin and completes 14 of 32 passes for 137 yards – with three interceptions, all by Jawian Harrison. Two interceptions came on consecutive possessions in the first quarter.
49ers: Tomsula familiar with Pittsburgh
Coach Jim Tomsula attended many Steelers games as a youngster. He will be back in the Steel City on Sunday and can count on familial support at Heinz Field.
Giants: They’re shut out by the Diamondbacks again
Manager Bruce Bochy has no explanation for his team’s power outage on Saturday against visiting Arizona. The Giants lose 6-0 before their 400th consecutive sellout crowd, making two errors as prospects of wedging themselves into the playoffs are appearing more remote with each loss.
A’s: Bullpen fails in loss to Astros
The A’s bullpen squanders a three-run lead in a 10-6 loss to the Houston Astros. Fernando Rodriguez fails to avoid the plague of the seventh inning that has haunted the A’s, who were officially eliminated from the playoff race.
