Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer entered three starters in Saturday’s $50,000 California Governor’s Cup, the richest race during Cal Expo’s State Fair meet. With a 4:45 p.m. post time as the eighth race, the six-furlong handicap attracted a field of eight fillies and mares.
Hollendorfer sends two 5-year- old mares: Cast in Silver, who finished fourth in this stakes last summer, and French-bred Charlie’s Angel, who will make her first start since October. In addition, Hollendorfer entered Alwazabridesmaid, a 4-year-old filly who won two sprints at Santa Anita earlier this year.
Also among the favorites will be Toomuchisnotenough, winner of three of her last four starts, and front-running Marynetta, the likely pacesetter.
Fans at Cal Expo also will be able to watch and wager on the 6:10 p.m. simulcast of Saturday’s San Diego Handicap live from Del Mar. California Chrome returns after a four-month break following his victory in the $10 million Dubai World Cup.
Never miss a local story.
On Sunday’s closing day, join The Bee’s Debbie Arrington and track announcer Chris Griffin for a free handicapping seminar at 11:45 a.m. on the main floor of the grandstand. First post Saturday and Sunday is 1:15 p.m.
