Even with their best player watching from the bench, the UC Davis men were undaunted in their first-place Big West Conference showdown at UC Irvine on Thursday night.
With Josh Ritchart scoring 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting, Tyler Les scoring a season-high 18 points and the Aggies holding the Anteaters to season-low 30.4 percent shooting, UC Davis rolled to a 75-56 stunner.
The Aggies (17-4, 7-1) snapped UCI’s six-game winning streak, ended a seven-game losing streak to the Anteaters (13-9, 6-2) and stayed atop the conference along with Long Beach State. The 49ers (13-11, 7-1) beat UC Riverside 68-63 and will host UC Irvine on Saturday. UCD visits Cal State Northridge the same night.
The Aggies played without conference scoring leader Corey Hawkins, who has a lower leg injury.
UCD, the NCAA Division I national three-point shooting percentage leader (45.4 percent) entering the game, shot a season-best 70 percent (7 of 10). UC Irvine shot just 20 percent (3 of 15) from long distance.
Ritchart, who had a team-high 24 points in the Aggies’ 81-78 overtime win against Cal Poly on Saturday, continued his sizzling shooting. He missed only a three-point attempt and had a team-high six rebounds.
Les made 4 of 5 from the field, including all three of his three-point attempts and was 7 of 7 from the foul line.
UCD led by 10 at halftime and as many as 25 points in the second half.
Will Davis (Sacramento High School) topped UCI with 18 points.
