The boys team at West Campus and the girls team at Inderkum can thank second chances for extending their basketball seasons.
Both teams lost in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, but all section semifinalists advance to the CIF Northern California playoffs to fill 16-team brackets. Now both are playing for NorCal championships Saturday after combining to go 6-0 since.
West (29-5) plays Palma of Salinas (25-4) at 4 p.m. in the Division IV championship at American Canyon High School in Napa County, followed by Inderkum (24-8) against Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco (19-9) in Division III at 6 p.m.
After West Campus missed a jumper at the buzzer and lost 47-46 to Central Catholic of Modesto in the section Division IV championship at Sleep Train Arena, the players were devastated. But coach Fred Wilson reminded the Warriors their season wasn’t over.
West Campus, seeded fourth in the NorCal playoffs, beat Corning 59-36 in an opener and St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo 52-51 in the second round, before stunning top-seeded and host Half Moon Bay 47-39 in a semifinal.
Balanced scoring and defense have been the key for the Warriors, who are led by Jeryn Lewis (13.9 points), Monty Khela (13.8), Darien Davis (11.5) and Isaiah Bates (11.2). Bates, an active 6-foot-6 senior forward, leads the team in rebounding (8.0).
Inderkum lost to Christian Brothers in the section semifinals, drew the No. 10 seed in the NorCal playoffs and beat Saratoga 47-37, Valley Christian of San Jose 41-36 and Campolindo in Moraga 57-49.
Kaliya Griffin, a 5-8 senior guard, leads Inderkum with 18.4 points, 4.1 assists and 3.7 steals per game. Senior guard Daisia Williams averages 12.9 points.
