Leading Off: Buster heats up while Giants swoon in June

This, that and the other thing:

You can't blame Buster Posey for the Giants' recent six-game skid and 2-8 record to end a 10-17 June. He batted .342 with four home runs and six RBIs in the past 10 games.

If the Giants are to match their 2012 regular-season record of 94-68, which won the National League West by eight games en route to a World Series title, they must go 55-26 the rest of the season.

From what we've seen after 81 games this year, there's no reason to believe the Giants can win 67.9 percent of their second-half games. Then again, there was no reason to believe they could overcome a 2-0 deficit to the Reds and a 3-1 deficit to the Cardinals last postseason.

At the NFL combine, teams strip the top college players down to their boxers trying to uncover as much as possible. Athletes are mentally and physically put through the wringer, including being asked every possible question. In the wake of former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez being charged with murder and Browns linebacker Ausar Walcott being charged with attempted murder, here's a new question: "Are you capable of murder?"

With Hernandez already charged with one murder and now being investigated in an unsolved double homicide last year, nobody will blink if investigators start digging in his backyard in search of Jimmy Hoffa's remains.

Happy retirement to former Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie, if he chooses that route. Petrie, whose contract expired Sunday, and his former coach at Princeton, Pete Carril, now have plenty of time for tennis.
