Republic FC controls its destiny

Republic FC finds itself in a nice position entering Saturday’s match against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at Bonney Field. Sacramento is in first place and playing its best soccer of the season. It is unbeaten in its last six matches, including three consecutive wins. If Republic FC (12-6-7, 43 points) wins the final five matches of the regular season, it will finish atop the USL Western Conference and potentially host three playoff games.

Republic FC beats Orange County on Cameron Iwasa’s record-tying goal

Playing on his old college pitch, Cameron Iwasa scores in the 76th minute and goalkeeper Evan Newton makes diving back-to-back stoppage time saves seconds apart to lead Republic FC to a 1-0 win over the Orange County Blues FC. The win extends Republic FC’s unbeaten streak to six consecutive matches and puts Sacramento alone atop the USL Western Conference, three points ahead of the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2. It also was the first win over the OC Blues FC in more than two years.

Republic FC newcomer Carlton Cole spreads his wings

After a week’s delay of trying to get travel documents, Carlton Cole arrived in Sacramento from the United Kingdom on Monday night. He conditioned along the sideline while Republic FC trained for Wednesday night’s USL match at the Orange County Blues FC. Cole will remain in Sacramento and continue to condition Wednesday and Thursday before he is expected to join his teammates in a full training session Friday.

Carlton Cole anxious to play with new Republic FC teammates

Republic FC’s new signings ramp up competition

It may have been no coincidence that Republic FC scored a USL season-high four goals in beating Saint Louis FC 4-3 last Saturday shortly after the club announced it had signed three new forwards, including former English Premier League player Carlton Cole. “Nobody wants their place to be threatened; nobody wants to be placed in jeopardy,” said Graham Smith, Republic FC’s director of football. “Everybody wants to be part of the magic circle, but football can be so cruel.”

Matt LaGrassa's makes first start with Republic FC memorable

Following a training session at Cosumnes River College on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, Sacramento Republic FC rookie midfielder Matt LaGrassa talked about making his first start in a USL match in St. Louis, where he had two assists in 4-3 win. The Pleasant Grove High School graduate helped move Republic into a three-way tie for first place in the Western Conference standings with Vancouver and Colorado Springs.

With coach Paul Buckle in the United Kingdom to be with his ailing father, Republic FC put on its biggest offensive show of the season in beating Saint Louis FC 4-3 Saturday night on the road in front of an announced crowd of 5,543 at the World Wide Technology Soccer Park.

Soccer notes: One more for Republic FC road warriors

When Republic FC returns to Sacramento after playing at Saint Louis FC on Saturday night, it will mark the end of a stretch of six road games in seven matches, including five in a row, away from Bonney Field. Sacramento will have accumulated nearly 16,000 frequent-flier miles during the five-week stretch of games. “I don’t think I have traveled that far in my 20 years as a player in the UK, to be honest,” Republic FC coach Paul Buckle said.

Republic FC director of football Graham Smith calls the signing of former English Premier League standout Carlton Cole another milestone for the third-year franchise. “It’s a great signing,” Smith said. “It’s a reflection of how Republic FC is perceived on the international soccer front now.”
