Republic FC’s Justin Braun and Real Monarchs SLC’s Lucas Baldin traded second-half goals as the sides played to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Bonney Field.
Republic FC extended its USL home sellout streak to 27 matches (Bonney Field and Hughes Stadium) with an announced crowd of 11,442.
Braun scored in the 67th minute on a header in front of the goal from a Rodrigo Lopez cross.
Baldin tied it in the 86th minute when he got behind the defense after a pass from Emery Welshman and beat Sacramento goalkeeper Patrick McLain with a well-placed shot into the right corner.
The tie keeps Republic FC (10-8-5, 35 points) in seventh place, though it moves within a point of Tulsa Roughnecks FC (10-10-6, 36 points) and Orange County Blues FC (11-9-3 36 points), both losers on Saturday.
Real Monarchs (2-13-8, 14 points) are last in the Western Conference but won the series against Republic FC with a 1-0-3 record.
Real Monarchs utilized a strategy that other teams have found effective. Until Braun’s goal, Real Monarchs played most of the match defending their box and playing physically. They took one shot and had nine fouls and a yellow card in the first half. Republic FC outshot Real Monarchs 15-5.
