Republic FC has signed former Cal Poly star Chase Minter, a midfielder who was taken 21st overall in the 2016 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by the Columbus Crew in January.
Minter said Republic FC’s success, push to move to MLS and interest in him before the MLS draft convinced him to return to California after Columbus decided not to sign him.
“It was a very enticing opportunity for me, and they were very keen to get me in,” Minter said.
Minter was a two-time All-Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year at Cal Poly. He shares the Mustangs’ all-time assists record with 21. He also scored 16 goals.

Republic FC coach Paul Buckle said Minter can play several positions, though he is primarily a left winger.
Minter is the third first-year Republic FC player from Cal Poly, joining midfielder Matt LaGrassa and forward Mackenzie Pridham.
