MATCHUP TO WATCH

Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson vs. 49ers wide receiver Anquan Boldin

An easy strategy for opposing defenses has been to try to shut down Boldin, taking away quarterback Colin Kaepernick's most trusted target. Arizona has one of the best players at doing that in Peterson, tied for the NFC lead with three interceptions. Last season, Michael Crabtree played physical against Peterson and had a big outing. It will be interesting to see whether Boldin, no slouch when it comes to the hard-nosed approach, learned anything from coach Crabtree before today's game.

THREE KEYS TO GAME

The 49ers have had success in recent weeks with the ground game. That will be a bigger challenge today against a Cardinals defense that has one of the NFL's most underrated players, lineman Calais Campbell, and ranks sixth in stopping the run.

The 49ers' defense did a brilliant job of disguising its coverages and tricking Matt Schaub into two of his three interceptions last week. Carson Palmer might not be fooled as easily, but he's just as immobile in the pocket. The 49ers should be able to apply pressure.

The 49ers' coverage units have been solid through five games but today face perhaps their biggest challenge in Peterson. The cornerback moonlights as a punt returner, and Arizona also uses him on offense.
