Rob Krar, 38, repeated as men’s champion of the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run just before nightfall at Placer High School in an unofficial time of 14 hours, 49 minutes. He missed the course record by less than three minutes.
Krar crossed the finish line nearly half an hour ahead of the second-place finisher, Seth Swanson of Missoula, Mont.
The event, which begins in Squaw Valley and ends in Auburn, follows the historic Western States Trail. Runners climb a total of more than 18,000 feet and descend nearly 23,000 before they reach the finish line.
