The Sacramento Municipal Utility District, along with the state, is stocking three Sierra Nevada reservoirs with rainbow trout through August.
The effort, which began in June, entails releasing at least 25,000 pounds of fish into El Dorado County’s Union Valley reservoir, Ice House reservoir and Loon Lake.
The fish stocking is a condition of SMUD’s new federal license to generate hydropower in the Upper American River Project.
“We’ll be doing it annually,” said Darold Perry, SMUD’s supervisor for hydro license implementation. “The amount of fish stocked can number as high as 50,000 pounds in a given year, depending on matched stocking by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.”
The planted trout will be 1 to 2 pounds each, according to a joint state and SMUD news release.
