Anglers looking for an excuse to take advantage of this weekend’s ideal weather can take part in SMUD’s annual trout derby at Rancho Seco Recreational Area Saturday and Sunday, and possibly win cash prizes or a boat.
The derby, which runs from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, offers anglers a chance at more than 1,000 pounds of trophy size trout that have been stocked in the 160-acre lake at the park 25 miles south of Sacramento.
SMUD says prizes will be awarded in categories for adults, youth and kids depending on the amount of fish caught. The grand prize for the heaviest trout caught is an aluminum boat, trailer and electric motor package.
The event has drawn thousands of participants since it began in 1993, SMUD said. Anglers 16 and older must have a valid state fishing license, and small boats with electric motors - but no ga engines - are allowed. The lake offers six fishing piers, and is home to bass, catfish and other species, as well as the trout.
A $5 charge applies for derby tickets, and admission to the park is $10 per car.
