Vlade Divac’s father, Milenko, died in an auto accident earlier today near Cacak, Serbia. His mother, Radmila, was seriously injured but is expected to survive. According to various reports, the car struck a light pole, went off the road, and then rolled several times. Milenko was 77.
Divac, who heads the Serbian Olympic Committee, played for the Kings from 1998-2004. His jersey, No.21, has been retired and hangs from the rafters at Sleep Train Arena.
The tragedy undoubtedly revives horrific memories for the beloved Kings center. Drazen Petrovic, the Croatian star and Divac’s closest boyhood friend, also perished in an auto accident in Germany, 1993. Weeks earlier, Petrovic, an exceptional shooter for the New Jersey Nets, had been an All-NBA selection.
