Why is the iconic Oscar De La Hoya, who promises to retire after a final fight Dec. 6, contemplating throwing hands with Sergio Mora instead of Antonio Margarito?
Especially since negotiations for megafights against the retired (for now) Floyd Mayweather Jr. and current Pound-For-Pound King Manny Pacquiao have sunk.
Sergio Who? The Latin Snake What?
Exactly.
It's a question I posed on my Facebook page a few days ago.
"Because Margarito would beat the (snot) out of Oscar," opined a poster named David.
A matchup between the Golden Boy, celebrating the 16th anniversary of Olympic gold at the Barcelona Games, and the Tijuana Tornado, coming off an awe-inspiring beatdown of Miguel Cotto, would satisfy any megafight specs. But De La Hoya has intimated he would not fight another Mexican national, not with the reams of backlash he absorbed after pummeling national hero Julio Cesar Chavez twice.
Plus, my Facebook friend Stephen posted that De La Hoya would be doing Mora, the first champion of the reality series "The Contender," a favor since both fighters are from East L.A. "Sergio is a homey," Stephen wrote. "Oscar has never been a fool."
Who do you want De La Hoya to face in his final fight?
What to watch: Browns at Giants, 5 p.m., ESPN. Watch Brady Quinn play, because you probably won't see him during the regular season.
What to surf: www.bradyquinnonline .com. Despite sitting on the bench, even the hunky Quinn has his own fan site.
What to do: Tacoma Rainiers at River Cats, 7:05 p.m., Raley Field. Five more regular-season home games left to see the Cats this season.
