PREP FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nick Law was there from the beginning at Whitney High School, watching its football team grow from infancy to a sudden giant:
The first-year varsity program, absorbing lumps against established schools.
The second-year wonder, when with its first senior class the Wildcats stormed to a 10-win season.
And this season. Law has anchored a defense that has played a paramount role in Whitney's 10-0 regular season. The Wildcats enter the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs as the prohibitive favorite in Division IV. That's the Law, so to speak.
"Experience has really helped us, especially on defense," said Law, a senior linebacker and one of the region's top defenders. "We're all better."
Law included. He had 12 tackles, two sacks and three fumble recoveries in a 34-12 win over Placer on Friday. He was voted The Bee's Prep Football Player of the Week on www.sacbee.com.
"Great player for us, a three-year starter who has made a lot of plays," Whitney coach Mike Gimenez said.
For the season, the 6-foot-1, 172-pound Law has 94 tackles and five sacks. He also has three touchdowns from his tight end position, but it's defense that he especially likes. He is good against the run, solid against the pass and quick to the ground when the ball is loose.
Law has a 3.3 grade-point average and is taking courses such as physics and accounting. He isn't sure if he will play college football, but he is pretty certain what he wants to do after college.
"Pharmaceutical sales," he said, the excitement clear in his voice. "I'd love it. I have always liked taking science classes, doing chemistry."
