Harms upholds family scholarship tradition
When El Dorado's Cora Harms signed a national letter of intent Monday to play volleyball on a full-ride scholarship for North Carolina, she became the third family member to earn a college scholarship for the sport. Older sisters Christine and Lillian were standouts, respectively, at Nevada and Sonoma State. North Carolina (19-9, 13-4) is one of the nation's better volleyball programs and leads the Atlantic Coast Conference but it's the men's basketball program that might have been a huge selling point for Cora. "UNC flew Cora to visit on the weekend of Midnight Madness," Cora's father, Dwayne "Peanut" Harms, wrote in an e-mail. "So you can imagine how blown away she was to see 25,000 fans attending a basketball practice!" He said his daughter also saw the volleyball team defeat Clemson and a win over Boston College in football. Cora also is a track and field standout, excelling in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles, so her father says she might also compete in that sport for the Tar Heels. It's no secret there is a genetic link to Cora's athletic talent. Peanut and Tena Harms, Cora's mother, are in the UC Davis Athletic Hall of Fame for track and cross country.
After further review, Scarr rushes for 471
After reviewing game tape of Friday night's 61-35 win against Oak Ridge, Ponderosa football officials said junior Lyndell Scarr rushed for 471 yards, which is an all-time area best. Scarr moves ahead of Cordova's James Montgomery, who in 2005 rushed for 452 yards in a 42-28 victory over Oak Ridge. Bethel's Dallas Bernstine holds the section record with 555 yards against Vintage in 2001. Scarr, who had 32 carries, also is the ESPN/RISE CalHiSports.com state boys Athlete of the Week and an ESPN/RISE national Player of the Week. Lindners doing well after kidney donation
Krista and Kevin Lindner are doing fine after their respective kidney surgeries Nov. 10 at UC Davis Medical Center. Kevin, the junior varsity boys basketball coach at Bella Vista, donated a kidney to his sister, who was on dialysis three days a week because of organ failure. "They're both home and doing really well," mom Lisa Lindner said. "Krista's kidney started working immediately. So everything is going according to schedule." Krista, a former Bella Vista volleyball star, was a starter for American River College this fall despite her ailment.
