I'm full. Not even another wafer-thin mint!
I spent Thanksgiving with the crack research team. Clayton and Sidney cooked the turkey. Mohammet and Jugdish prepared the sides, and Lonny served dessert.
The only problem with the feast was they tried to re-enact an episode of "Iron Chef America" with artichokes as the secret ingredient. It didn't go well in the dessert.
The Chairman (that's a Food Network reference) would have been pleased with them, but in all of the slicing and dicing they forgot to compile this week's list of fresh Web sites to view. That's why we have "leftovers" this week, serving up sites that didn't make it into Site Lines this fall. They're a mish-mash, but throw them in the microwave, and they will work just fine for lunch:
IMAYNE STREET
The site: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/feature/index?page=maynestreet
The skinny: ESPN has given former "SportsCenter" anchor Kenny Mayne a five-minute comedy show, "Mayne Street," twice a week. It's more like a sitcom than the segments you would normally see him offer during ESPN's "NFL Countdown" weekly show.
The call: If you like Mayne's dry humor, you will love "Mayne Street." He is not afraid to make fun of sports, the odd situations of his profession (imagine him in a clown suit interviewing a demoted pitcher) or ESPN. This feature is new, but many of you will find yourselves looking forward to these videos.
NFL TOUCHDOWN
The site: www.nfltouchdown.com
The skinny: You might have heard about the site's creator, Andy Benoit. He became famous 11 years ago at age 11 when he started publishing an NFL preview magazine, "NFL Touchdown," which has been lauded by nearly every major news outlet covering the league. He brings that same dedication to the magazine's Web site.
The call: This is a very good site. Benoit makes great observations on the league in his frequent blogs and weekly power rankings, which offer some interesting insights. He also has links to prominent blogs about every NFL team, making this a one-stop shop for NFL reading.
NFL REPLAY RE-CUTTER
The site: http://replay-re-cutter.nfl.com
The skinny: This is a beta page at NFL.com. The NFL lets you use footage from your favorite team's past weekend games and create unique highlight reels. For instance, a Dolphins fan just created a Chad Pennington re-cut with a special soundtrack that was top shelf.
The call: This is one of the coolest Web innovations of the year. This feature opens a lot of doors for fans. These highlight videos can be shared and downloaded by other fans, in the same way you can share collections of your favorite artist on iTunes. Expect other pro leagues to jump on this bandwagon.
THE SOCIAL GOLFER
The site: www.thesocialgolfer.com
The skinny: This site has an interesting concept: Golfers can fill out that pairing or foursome with someone who regularly plays a course or is of similar handicap. It also offers more detailed descriptions and ratings than most golf sites, including all of the courses in the Sacramento area.
The call: This is not a dating site. It's a legitimate place to meet like-skilled golfers. The site is in its infancy, but on the surface it works very well. Plus, membership is free. It's not getting much use now but has a lot of potential.
