Grant's great running back mystery is solved.
Devontae Booker and Devontae Butler are one and the same football player.
It's Devontae Butler on the roster. But the 5-foot-11, 180-pound junior wears "Booker" on his jersey. It has caused some confusion in media reports during the season.
"My mother's last name is Butler, but my father's last name is Booker," he said after rushing for 197 yards and five touchdowns on 22 carries in the Pacers' 49-14 win over Woodcreek on Friday in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division II semifinal in Del Paso Heights.
"I prefer Booker."
Grant coach Mike Alberghini is just glad to have the latest in a long line of special runners, especially entering next Friday night's championship game at Folsom High School against Metro Conference rival Burbank. The Titans beat Roseville 36-27 in Friday's other semifinal.
Booker's emergence as the team's top running back was a bit of a surprise. He played only limited minutes last season on the junior varsity and was in a three-man rotation with seniors Marvin Lamb and Howard Warren in a bid to be the featured back at the start of the season.
"We watched him play and knew the ball should be in his hands," Alberghini said. "We inserted him as our starter in Week 4, and he has had a magnificent season."
Booker has rushed for 1,643 yards and 33 touchdowns. He had touchdown runs of 50, 10, two, one and one yards against Woodcreek.
Quarterback Kipeli Koniseti rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, and Warren scored on a 52-yard run.
Grant (12-0), which led only 12-0 at halftime, limited Woodcreek (6-6) to 69 passing yards and 84 rushing yards.
"John did a hell of a job to scheme a plan to keep his team in the game," Alberghini said of Woodcreek coach John Hildebrand. "We were just too big and fast for them."
Laguna Creek 33, Napa 13 in Napa Keenen Williams had a 90-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, and the Cardinals (9-3) forced seven turnovers five fumbles and two interceptions to upend the defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division I champion Indians (10-2) on their home turf.
Williams, who rushed for 123 yards on 12 carries, also scored on a seven-yard run; Diondre Batson had an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and Chris Jones had two fumble recoveries and an interception to advance the Cardinals to next Friday's City Championship semifinal against Pleasant Grove.
Matt Hambrick recovered two fumbles, Eric Thomas recovered a fumble and Chris Jackson had an interception.
"It was billed as their offense against our defense," Laguna Creek coach Mark Nill said. "We're pretty excited by the outcome. Our defense played an all-around outstanding game."
Casa Roble 52, Rodriguez 35 in Orangevale Matt Satchwell rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns on 23 carries and also returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to lead the Rams (12-0) past the Mustangs (9-3). The win propelled Casa Roble into the Division III title game against Inderkum next Saturday at Oakmont High School.
Marysville 14, LeGrand 0 at Marysville Matt Horsfall returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown, and James Chandless rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown as the Indians (9-2) downed the Bulldogs (7-5) to advance to the Division VI title game next Friday against Golden Empire League rival Lindhurst, a 28-6 winner over Mariposa.
