Home Cookin': Sierra to honor two longtime coaches

Names: Roz Goldenberg and George Goto

Local ties: Sierra College

The skinny: Years of profound coaching impact prompted Sierra athletic director John Volek to have the school's basketball court named in honor of retired coaches Goto and Goldenberg. The Goto/Goldenberg Court will be officially named during a formal ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Friday between the men's and women's games against Santa Rosa.

Goto's tenure: Goto, 82, was a star player at the college well before he was a legendary coach in the 1960s and '70s, when some of his best players became some of the region's top prep basketball coaches, including Gary Donnell of Oakmont and Ron Pucci of Colfax. When the Wolverines hailed from Placer College in Auburn – before moving to Rocklin and changing to Sierra in 1961 – Goto was a member of the 33-7 state championship team of 1949-50. Goto coached baseball, basketball and golf at Sierra and was the school's athletic director in the 1980s.

Goldenberg gold: Goldenberg, 51, would still be coaching the Sierra women if her doctor didn't inform her she'd keel over and die of a heart attack during a game. She retired two years ago, knowing she had to alter her lifestyle and diet and learn to enjoy the good things in life. She has done all of these things. A world traveler, happier and healthier, Goldenberg spent the fall semester researching health and wellness for college faculty and staff on sabbatical, with plans to incorporate her findings in Sierra courses. Monday was her first day back at Sierra, where she teaches health classes (and at night teaches "Boot camp weight management and stress reduction classes," Goldenberg said, to faculty and others). Goldenberg won 353 games in 15 years at Sierra, including a 36-1 state title team in the 1998-99 season.

She said it: "I thought maybe my cardiologist called Volek and told him, 'You'd better honor Roz real quick!' No, this is a very special honor. I have so many special memories of that court. It's cool for my dad, too, same name. He's 88, in Southern California. I'll send him a picture."

More of Moore in 2009?

Name: Carl Moore

Local ties: Cordova High School, Sierra College

The skinny: Moore accepted a scholarship a year ago to Florida – USC, LSU and an army of others were also in hot pursuit – largely because he wanted to catch the deep ball from Heisman Trophy-winning passer Tim Tebow. He did in the regular season this fall, but in the BCS championship game against top-ranked Oklahoma, Moore was relegated to sideline duty. The junior wide receiver did not dress because of a hamstring injury that slowed him late this season. Moore still has a chance to catch some Heisman passes, as Tebow announced days after Florida downed the Sooners he would return for his senior season. With so many starters back, the Gators should be the overwhelming preseason No. 1 team in 2009 and a good bet to return to the BCS title game. What's more, star wide receiver Percy Harvin could opt for the NFL draft, meaning more time for Moore, who started in place of Harvin in the big win over Alabama in the Southeastern Conference title game and caught a touchdown pass from Tebow.

Garrison off to Baptist

Name: Tyler Garrison

Local ties: Rocklin High School

The skinny: The soccer star has signed a national letter of intent to score goals at California Baptist University of Riverside. He was a four-year varsity player for the Thunder, helping the team win two Sac-Joaquin Section titles.

He said it: Baptist coach Ryan Jorden: "Tyler's athleticism, personal qualities and personality will be a great addition to our program."
