After seemingly seamless travel from Spain to Los Angeles to Sacramento in recent days, Ricky Rubio's road trip encountered an unexpected delay Wednesday.
The Spanish point guard who arrived Tuesday afternoon became sick, meaning a highly anticipated afternoon basketball session at the Kings' practice facility did not take place. Rubio, who is here only to gauge the Kings' interest in him at the No. 4 spot in the June 25 draft, might attempt to conduct the session this morning.
Rubio watched a Kings workout with six other prospects Wednesday before lunching with team representatives. A sore throat and fatigue limited the itinerary to socializing.
Per draft rules, Rubio can stay only 48 hours and must be gone around 2 p.m. today. And though it's clear he was willing to engage in some level of basketball activities while here, it's unclear whether he will.
Rubio's high-profile visit with the Kings had started well, with a long dinner Tuesday night setting a positive tone while the team deliberated a possible future together. There was much to discuss, including the basketball question of whether Rubio is the right fit, and business matters.
The problematic buyout of his contract with his current team, DKV Joventut, remains pivotal, with Rubio reportedly obligated to pay $6.6 million this season to play in the NBA and $8 million if he waits until next season.
According to an ESPN.com report, Rubio who has not filed a lawsuit but has asked for arbitration to settle the dispute has retained a highly regarded labor law firm in Barcelona to represent him. Civil legal action would be his next course of action.
Sources with knowledge of the situation say Rubio's camp still has no more visits scheduled on this trip. That includes Memphis, which has the No. 2 pick and is a team for which Rubio reportedly has no interest in playing, and Oklahoma City, which might opt for firepower with its No. 3 pick instead of a true point guard who could step on the toes of incumbent rising star Russell Westbrook. If Rubio's American draft tour indeed begins and ends in Sacramento, it will say everything about what's to come.
Meanwhile, the Kings' schedule is booked. They have a workout with USC swingman DeMar DeRozan on Saturday, and a Sunday session including Davidson guard Stephen Curry in his first Kings workout and a second visit for guards Tyreke Evans (Memphis) and Nick Calathes (Florida). On Monday, Pittsburgh forward Sam Young headlines a multi-player workout.
Porter to 'sit out' next season Terry Porter won't be with the Kings next season, or likely any other NBA team.
In a phone interview, Porter, who was a Kings assistant in the 2002-03 season, said he plans to "sit out" next season.
After being discussed as a potential assistant to newly hired Kings coach Paul Westphal, Porter said he spoke with Westphal about the job, but the process went no further. Porter, who began last season as Phoenix's head coach, is being paid through next season on his Suns contract. He said he would look out for opportunities.
"I really just have to see when they come, and go from there," he said.
Dallas assistant Mario Elie is believed to be a strong candidate for one of the vacant Kings assistant jobs, while Idaho Stampede coach and two-time NBA Development League Coach of the Year Bryan Gates also is being considered.
