Leading Off: Cycling's best show how it's done in Davis

Published: Sunday, Jul. 5, 2009 - 12:00 am | Page 1C

With the Tour de France beginning overseas, Saturday seemed like a good day to get close to cycling at the Davis Criterium.

The 33rd edition of the Fourth of July event wound through the streets of downtown Davis. It featured kids to masters to elite level riders.

With three bike shops along the 0.7-mile route, it reinforced all I had heard about Davis being a biking community. It was a day that should make Davis proud.

So while attending the event with three of my favorite ladies, my testosterone told me, "I can do this. I could at least race in the masters event for the over-35 set."

Then, I noticed those guys were good. A closer look showed their bikes were thousands of dollars more expensive than my Fuji. A whisper in my ear reminded me these guys practice more than I do, they have cycling coaches and they pedal about 15 mph faster than me.

As reality set in, I decided to find a safer sport. I wonder how well I would do at skiing?
