Raiders scouting report

Published: Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009 - 11:00 pm | Page 13C

• Time: 1:05 p.m.

• Line: Chargers by 16 1/2.

• Records: Raiders 2-5; Chargers 3-3.

• TV: Ch. 13; Dick Enberg (play-by-play), Dan Fouts (color).

• Radio: KTKZ (1380 AM), KAHI (950 AM); Greg Papa (play-by-play), Tom Flores (color).

• Why watch? The Chargers try to run their winning streak in the series to 13, and it's an opportunity to see which Raiders team shows up – the one that played inspired in beating Philadelphia two weeks ago or the one that was embarrassed by the Jets last weekend.

• Rewind: The Raiders outplayed the Chargers on both sides of the ball for 57 minutes plus in a Monday night season opener, only to fall 24-20 on Darren Sproles' five-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds to play that culminated a nine-play, 89-yard drive.

WHO'S THE MAN?

JaMarcus Russell

RAIDERS QUARTERBACK

Pulled from a game for poor play for the first time, Russell has many eyes upon him to see how he reacts to his second-quarter benching against the Jets. Accountability also has been an issue for the former No. 1 draft pick.

RAIDERS' THREE KEYS

• Summon the recent past. Oakland must remember just how and why it played the Chargers so tough in the season opener. Take it how you will, but coach Tom Cable said last week all the Raiders were missing was confidence.

• Wherefore art thou, JaMarcus Russell? Indeed, it will be interesting to see how the purported franchise quarterback responds the first time he runs into trouble. Will he man up and play through the tough times or start to look over his shoulder?

• No more prevent defense, especially if the Raiders hold a late lead. After dominating the line for most of the opener, the Raiders fell back into the soft cover "D" and allowed the Chargers an 89-yard, game-winning drive.

CHARGERS' THREE KEYS

• Resurrect L.T. Yes, LaDainian Tomlinson seems to have lost a step, but he still owns the Raiders despite a forgettable opener in Oakland. In 17 career games against the Raiders, he has rushed for 1,961 yards.

• More Darren Sproles. The diminutive 5-foot-6 sprite had 246 total yards in the opener – 23 rushing, 43 receiving, 170 on kickoff returns and 10 on punt returns. More of the same sets up San Diego nicely.

• Let the Raiders sweat Shawne Merriman while unleashing Shaun Phillips. Sure, Merriman gets all the pub, but his fellow linebacker has been just as big a nuisance to the Raiders over the years, with 9 1/2 career sacks against Oakland.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha vs. Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson

Asomugha's reputation as the best pure cover corner in the game precedes him. The physical Jackson, meanwhile, has three games with at least 120 receiving yards, including 142 and a touchdown last week in a 37-7 beatdown of the Chiefs. Something has to give.
