The 27th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team posted the biggest win its brief history Wednesday, beating a high-powered field that included top-ranked UCLA by nine shots at the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational in Kahuku, Hawaii. Half of the 18 teams in the 54-hole tournament are ranked in the Top 50 by Golfweek. UCLA, No. 8 USC and No. 10 Cal finished second through fourth, respectively.
UC Davis had three players among the top 10, including true freshmen Amy Simanton (tied for second at 3-under-par 213) and Demi Runas (tied for 10th at 2-over 218). UCD junior Alice Kim tied for seventh at 1-over 217.
Sophomore Tyler Raber captured his first collegiate title as the UC Davis men rallied to win the Pacific Invitational in Stockton. The Aggies finished one stroke ahead of second-place BYU and two shots in front of third-place Oregon.
Raber, who had a school-record 63 Tuesday, shot a 72 to post a school-record 54-hole total of 199. Eugene Wong of Oregon finished second, four strokes back. Sacramento State's Grant Rappleye recorded a personal-best 68 to tie for 20th as the Hornets finished 11th.
Downing shuts out Argentine in tennis
Martha Downing of Shingle Springs crushed Graciela Marini 6-0, 6-0 in the women's 60-and-over division of the International Tennis Federation Super-Seniors World Team Championships in Perth, Australia. Downing, who has lost one game in two matches, led the third-seeded United States to a 3-0 victory over unseeded Argentina.
Big West names Aggie top female athlete
UC Davis cross country runner Sarah Sumpter was named the 2009 Female Athlete of the Year in the Big West Conference. Sumpter became the first runner in UCD's Division I history to win the Big West Championships, finishing Saturday's six-kilometer race in a season-best 20 minutes, 34 seconds.
Freshman leads UCD men in basketball
Freshman Ryan Howley scored 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting as the UC Davis men's basketball team beat visiting Cal State East Bay 83-56 in an exhibition game.
