Recently, I was talking with Jerry Reynolds, the Kings' director of player personnel, about how this year's team was more fun to watch.
Though the Kings are 1-4, they scrap for the ball, hustle and seem to put out a better effort. Last season, they didn't seem this exciting.
We agreed the biggest reason for this is new coach Paul Westphal. But not because of his work as coach of the Suns or SuperSonics or his front-office duties with the Mavericks.
The best preparation Westphal had was his years as a college coach at Southwestern College and Grand Canyon College in Phoenix, and at Pepperdine.
His first two college jobs were at small schools, but he found success at both. Most notably, he led Grand Canyon to the 1988 NAIA Tournament championship before becoming a Suns assistant.
I questioned his ability to relate to a Kings team with seven players born after 1986. That college experience has given Westphal a way to get the players listening to him. He has shown the patience to handle a rebuilding roster.
Despite the team's recent woes on and off the court, it looks like he has gone back to college to rebuild a pro team.
