Regional Digest: Sac State men to be top seed in soccer event

Some big contributions from three players helped the Sacramento State men's soccer team defeat visiting San Jose State 4-3 on Saturday.

The Hornets will begin play Friday in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament in Denver as the top seed. They will have a first-round bye.

The Hornets (10-5-2 overall) finished their MPSF season 6-0-1.

Fernando Cabadas (Hiram Johnson High School), Jason Duvall (Rio Americano) and David von Stockhausen each scored a goal and assisted on another for the Hornets. Max Alvarez had the other goal, and Oscar Torrico had two assists. Goalkeeper Nick Gargiulo (Jesuit) had two saves.

Christian Romero (Woodcreek) had two assists for the Spartans (9-9-1, 4-3-0).

The Spartans trailed 3-0 but tied the score 3-3 in the 82nd minute. Fourteen seconds later, Alvarez scored for the final margin.

• Visiting UC Davis lost 2-0 at UC Santa Barbara in a Big West men's match. The Gauchos (14-3-2, 8-1-1) ended the Aggies' regular season at 6-12-1, 3-6-1.

Idaho State volleyball sweeps Sac State

The Sacramento State women's volleyball team lost to Idaho State at home for the first time in school history. The Hornets were swept 26-24, 26-24, 25-21 in the Big Sky Conference match. The Hornets (15-13, 5-7) are in danger of not making the postseason tournament event for the first time since joining the Big Sky in 1996. The Bengals (11-14, 5-8) had been 0-13 against the Hornets in Sacramento. Rocklin High products Kelsey Elston and Janelle Currey each had eight kills for the Hornets, who lost at home Friday to Weber State for just the second time in school history.

• Kayla Varney had a team-high 11 kills, but visiting UC Davis still lost 25-20, 25-22, 25-22 to Long Beach State in a Big West Conference match. Melanie Adams (Oak Ridge) had nine kills for UC Davis (18-9, 9-4). The 49ers (16-6, 9-3) got a team-high 15 kills from Caitlin Ledoux.

UCD's Brambila named all-tournament

Lydia Brambila of UC Davis was named to the NorPac Championship all-tournament field hockey team. Brambila was one of 12 players recognized by the conference for outstanding play at the NorPac tournament in Stanford. She had the lone goal in the Aggies' 2-1 overtime loss to Davidson in a consolation match Friday.
