Bee Sports Editor/Opinion

49ers' future QB is playing on Saturdays

The view from section LR19, Row 3 at Candlestick Park on Sunday did nothing to dissuade me from my prior thoughts on the 49ers' quarterback situation.

The answer is in next April's NFL draft.

That is obvious after watching Alex Smith from the end zone behind him. He zeroed in early on receivers. He didn't check off enough to his secondary targets. And he didn't adapt to different defensive looks.

Smith has improved, but not enough to get the 49ers to the promised land – or at least the playoffs.

The answer won't be Shaun Hill or Nate Davis, either.

It's time for 49ers fans to start watching Saturday college football more closely. Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen, Washington's Jake Locker, Texas' Colt McCoy, Florida's Tim Tebow, Cincinnati's Tony Pike, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford (out for the season with an injury) or, my favorite, Mississippi's Jevan Snead, might be their solution in what is expected to be a quarterback-heavy draft.

Whomever the 49ers take, he should be more accurate than Smith was Sunday.
