Costumes brighten cultural dances

The African-based dances performed by the dance troupe at Sol Aureus College Preparatory School in south Sacramento are about to become more colorful.

Book of Dreams readers purchased gorgeous brightly colored material and two sewing machines for the program, so dancers can make - and wear - new colorful costumes during performances.

"With all the different colors, they're flashy," said Laqwesha Tobias, 13, one of the dancers in the after-school program at the Meadowview Road private school. "Once the light comes beaming on the girls that are dancing, it will make the dance look much better."

Most students at the school come from low-income families. The school is designed to instill self-discipline, pride and feelings of accomplishment in students. The dance troupe, run by dance teacher Yemanya Napue, also seeks to expose children to African culture.

With the potential to make more beautiful costumes, students at Sol Aureus College Preparatory will add a colorful new visual element to their dances.
