The leaf chair is installed at Woodland Community Options, and already it has made a noticeable difference with clients.
The suspended canvas chair wraps around the disabled clients' bodies, giving them a respite from the wheelchairs that most of them sit in all day. Book of Dreams readers purchased the chair.
"Sometimes when (the clients) are in their wheelchairs too long ... they can get sores," said Christie Copeland, program supervisor at Woodland Community Options. "The leaf chair is soothing ... it's really relaxing. It's soothing because it also rocks and a lot of them like that rocking sensation."
Woodland Community Options is a day program for people with disabilities. It operates under the umbrella of United Cerebral Palsy. The program allows people with disabilities, who might stay home all day with little stimulation, work with trained caregivers who help them complete art projects or learn basic life skills.
The program adds variety and socialization to clients' lives.
"We like to take them out in a different variety of chairs," Copeland said. "They're here all day long."
