Bounty of books to read and share

About 130 new children's books are ready to begin their trek to tutoring sites throughout Sacramento.

The new books, with titles such as "All the Colors of the Earth" and "Gathering the Sun," will be used by tutors from River City RoadRunner Inc. The nonprofit organization brings tutors and learning materials to children.

The group aims to help low-income children who might not have the resources at home to enhance their reading and other academic skills. Its tutors bring the lessons to the kids - for free.

With new books donated by Book of Dreams readers, the children will have a wider selection of books they can take home.

"We got several books with multiples of each book so we could provide the kids with copies of the actual book that was read to them," said Rodger Stein, co-chairman of the organization.

"The kids can read the book, have the discussion about the book, do an art project and now be able to take the book home with them and share the experience with their families," Stein said. "Particularly in the situation where English is the second language, this is beneficial all around."
