Ready to take the plunge at YMCA pool

The lap lanes at the local YMCA swimming pool are beckoning Marcus Higgins.

Now, thanks to Book of Dreams readers, he can answer that call.

Higgins, 55, who is impaired from being hit by a car when he was a child, loves to swim laps.

But finding a place to swim hasn't been as easy as it once was. His schedule has often conflicted with the lap swimming hours at the public pool where he usually swims.

Higgins, who is a chess wizard and a budding playwright, is hoping the bigger pool at the YMCA in the Arden Arcade area and its longer lap swimming hours will allow him to swim more frequently.

"The pool down at the Y would be a bit bigger," Higgins said after he received the paperwork for his YMCA membership. "Maybe there won't be as many people swimming in the pool so I can swim without worrying about bumping into people."

Higgins has another motive for joining the YMCA.

"I'm interested in meeting new people," he said.
