How to use The Sacramento Bee News Archive

To search the archives, enter words and phrases that you expect to find in the articles you're seeking. Click "Search" or press Enter to begin searching. You can use the words "and," "or" and "butnot" to refine your search, and you can separate your terms with parentheses to prevent ambiguity. For example:

    Davis and election
Sacramento and tax but not crime
Cake and (concert or clubs) but not baking

You can search for specific fields (like sources, dates and sections) by typing that information in parentheses following the field name. For example:

    source(peter king) and date(February 21, 1999)

Using the pulldown menu, you can search for words that appear in the headline, byline, lead paragraph or anywhere in the story.

You can also limit your search to the last seven or 30 days, the last six months, or by a complete year.

The search is interactive, fast and free of charge. It's best to try several searches before viewing articles.

Search Options

The archive software returns the first 25 articles that match your search in reverse chronological order -- unless you tell it otherwise. You can specify more articles -- 50, 100 or 200 -- using the pulldown menu. You can also choose to list articles in chronological order, or oldest first.

The archive software also allows you to rank stories in terms of relevance to your search. This lists articles in order of the number of search words they contain. Relevance ranking starts with frequency, then uses a dictionary to weight search words. Less common words are ranked higher.
