Law enforcement lacking when handling public records requests
This interactive map shows at a glance how well the region's law enforcement agencies complied with public records access laws.
Overall, 53 percent of oral requests for local law enforcement records were ignored, dismissed or took longer than the legally allowed 10 days for a response. The written request response was worse - 67 percent were either never replied to or only after 10 days.
Statewide, agencies didn't fare too well, either. An 'F' was the average grade assigned by Californians Aware -- the nonprofit that coordinated the audit -- to departments across the state. Use the zoom slider on the left to see the rest of the state results.
The full report can be read at Californians Aware's website A database with more detailed results can be found here.
The audit was conducted with the help of 65 employees and volunteers from 31 newspaper and broadcast news organizations.
