| Helm Auxiliary Field No. 6 | 773.08 | Coalinga | The 773.08 acres that comprised Helm Auxiliary Field No. 6 was purchased by the US Government on 11 Jan. 1943. The site was acquired for use by the Army Air Corps as an auxiliary landing field to Lemoore Army Air Field in connection with the establishment of the Lemoore Basic Flying School. The improvements included roads, hard-surfaced runways, fencing, a crash truck shelter, stage house, control tower, motor house and latrines. On 15 October 1944, the site was declared surplus by the War Assets Administration (WAA). The WAA assumed accountability of the site on 12 September 1946. Available records do not indicate if any deed clauses, provisions, or restrictions existed for the site. A portion of the site is currently used as an agricultural support area. Another portion of the site is occupied by an irrigation supply company, and the remainder of the site is used as farmland. |
| Indian Auxiliary Field No. 3 | 641.60 | Coalinga | In 1944, the US Government acquired fee title to 641.60 acres of land by Declaration of Taking. The site was used by Army Air Force as an auxiliary landing field to Lemoore Army Air Field in connection with the establishment of the Lemoore Basic Flying School. The improvemnets included hard surfaced runways, fencing, crash truck shelter, stage house, control tower, motor house, and latrine. On 15 Oct. 1944, the 641.60 acre site was declared surplus to the War Assets Administration (WAA) with accountability assumed on 12 Sep. 1946. Available records do not indicate the condition of the facilities at the time of transfer to WAA, nor the date of sale or transfer by the WAA or GSA. The records do not indicate if any deed clauses, provisions, or restrictions existed. A title search indicates two current owners of the subject site. |
| F-83 Dos Palos Military Reservation | 15.00 | Fresno | On 13 Nov. 1943, the US entered into a lease (No. W-04-193-ENG-3809) with Ralph, Marie and Lawrence Painter of Fresno County. The number of leased acres was 15.00. The site was used by the Air Force for, it is presumed, an emergency landing field. No evidence remains of military use. The site was declared surplus 4 Dec. 1945, and the lease was terminated on 31 Jan. 1947. DoD records do not indicate if any restoration provisions were required. |
| Mount Campbell Rifle Range | 653.20 | Fresno | On 1 June 1943, the Dept. of the Army acquired 210 lease acres that compose the Mt. Campbell Rifle Range. The site was used as a rifle range. Site improvements included a target area consisting of an earth mound supported by a concrete retaining wall, and a small wood frame building adjacent to the retaining wall. The lease was terminated on 30 June 1978. Records do not indicate any restrictions, clauses or restoration provisions. Available records do not indicate the condition of the facilities at the date of disposal. The site is currently undeveloped grassland used as cattle pasture with restricted access. |
| Hammer Field | 1601.00 | Fresno | Hammer Field originally consisted of 1,616.95 acres of which 781.96 were acquired in fee, 831.93 acres by lease, 1.42 acres by easement and 1.64 acres by permit. These acquisitions took place between 1941 and 1945. The site was located five miles northeast of Fresno, CA and acquired by the Army Air Force for the Airways Detachment to set up a sub-base of Camp Pinedale. Effective 23 May 1946, the entire installation was declared surplus with the exception of 16.3 acres. On 13 Jul 1949, 799.69 leased acres were reported to the War Assets Administration (WAA). Three other leases were previously cancelled between 1943 and 1946, totaling 32.24 acres. On 7 Sep 1950, in a final audit report, WAA assumed accountability of 758.9 acres of fee land, 1.42 acres in easement interests, and 1.64 acres of fee owned land to be used by the California National Guard. In a revised audit dated 10 Nov 1952, the acreage used by the California National Guard was listed as 23.06 acres fee-owned land, which was reassigned to Hammer Field for the National Guard Training Area. The total acreage for disposal was 781.96 acres fee, 831.93 acres leased, 1.42 acres easement and 1.64 acres permit. Based on the foregoing findings of fact, the site has been determined to be formerly used Department of Defense (DoD) property. It is therefore eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites established under 10 USC 2701 et seq. |
| Basic Training Center No. 8 | 300.00 | Fresno | A TOTAL OF 300 ACRES WERE ESTABLISHED AS ARMY AIR FORCE BASIC TRAINING NO. 8 IN 1942. THIS SITE WAS USED AS A GROUND TRAINING FACILITY FOR THE ARMY AND AN INTERIM DETENTION FACILITY FOR JAPANESE-AMERICANS. IN 1946, THE PROPERTY WAS SURPLUSED BY THE WAR ASSETS ADMINISTRATION WITH 130 BEING USED BY THE FRESNO FAIRGROUNDS AND THE REMAINDER GOING TO PRIVATE PARTIES. |
| Lemoore Emergency Landing Field | 220.59 | Lemoore | The site wad located approximately one mile north of Coalinga, Fresno County, CA. In 1942, a total of 220.59 acres were leased from Standard Oil Company of CA (SOCC) and the Coalinga Chamber of Commerce (CCC). The site consisted of four tracts of land, Tracts 1,2, and 3 were owned by SOCC. Tract 4 was owned by CCC. The site was used as an emergency landing field by the Army Air Force. A 3,600 square foot hanger on the premises was leased from the CCC by the Army Air Force. The site was declared surplus on 21 April 1945. Both leases were terminated on 19 May 1945. The site is currently owned by Cheveron USA, Inc. The Coalinga Airport is currently leased for Chevron by the City of Coalinga and subleased from the city by Spencer Aviation Company. The property serves as a municipal airport for light aircraft. |
| West Auxiliary Field No. 5 | 522.32 | Lemoore | Sometime after 8 September 1942, the U.S. acquired 522.32 fee acres by Declaration of Taking. The site was used by the Army as an auxiliary field. On 20 September 1946, the War Assets Administration assumed accountability for the site. The site is presently owned by company and private landowners.
