| Coyote Wells Gap Fil Ax P76b | 0.33 | 8 Miles Se Of Coyote Wells | In February 1957, the Air Force obtained right-of-entry for this 0.33-acre site from the Department of the Interior. This site was an off-base installation under the control of the Mount Laguna Air Station and was part of the National Defense System. It consisted of a 0.32-acre, remote-operated radar aircraft warning station and 0.01-acre access road. At the time of disposal, the improvements reportedly included a main building, tower, latrine, underground tank for storing heat fuel oil, road, concrete sidewalk, and fence. The Air Force declared this site as excess in 1960. The subject property and above-mentioned improvements were retransferred to the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management on 6 October 1965. The site is still under the control of the Bureau of Land Management, and does not appear to have been put to beneficial use since its disposal by DOD. The above-listed improvements were abandoned; their remains are still onsite. |

The Navy initially established an artillery range on a portion of this site during WWII. Eventually, the Navy established an air to air and air to ground aerial gunnery range. All types of conventional ordnance deployed from aircraft are used at the range including rockets, bombs, and machine guns. Only a few improvements are located within the range boundary including a building, mine shafts, and a couple of wind mills. |

| Camp Pilot Knob | 4004.75 | Felicity | A total of 18 tracts of land (4,004.75 acres) comprised the camp area. Between January and April 1943, the War Department acquired 1559.66 acres via Use Permit from the Department of Interior (DoI), 1067 acres via permits from private individuals, and 640 acres from the State of California. No formal permission was obtained for 80 acres from the DoI and 658.09 from private individuals. As part of the California-Arizona Manuever Area (CAMA), later renamed the Desert Training Center, Camp Pilot Knob was designed as a temporary location to train troops in desert warfare. The land reverted back to the original owners when the Army canceled 1725.09 acres of the lesser interest permits during the period 1 June 1944 to 27 February 1945 and a 640-acre lesser interest permit on 28 October 1952. The public domain areas were relinquished to the DoI on 20 April 1945 (1559.66 acres-Use Permit) and on 24 December 1948 (80 acres-no formal permission obtained). Currently, the 18 former tracts that comprised Camp Pilot Knob can be tracked to approximately 76 parcels totalling 3886.75 acres. Of the 76 parcels that comprise the camp, 16 (2566 acres) are owned by the government through the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The remaining 60 parcels (1320.75 acres) are owned by the private sector. Approximately 118 acres are not accounted for due to the expansion of the Interstate, railroad right-of-ways, and other miscellaneous right-of-ways. Based on the foregoing Findings of Fact, the site has been determined to have been formerly used by the Department of Defense. It is therefore eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program - Formerly Used Defense Sites established under 10 USC 2701 et seq. |
