| Farallon Islands | | Installation Not In A City | Between approximately 1905 and 1939, the U.S. Navy occupied and used the southeast portion of the Southeast Farallon Island as a Radio Direction Finder (DF) Station. The site is within the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, 30 miles west of San Francisco, CA. Between 1946 and 1970, the U.S. Navy disposed of radioactive waste and chemical and conventional munitions wastes within and near the GFNMS. In 1951, the USS Independence was reported to have been sunk within the waters of the GFNMS. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under U.S.C. 2701 et seq. |
