Inyokern Airfield1320.02InyokernInyokern Airfield was acquired by the Department of Defense (DoD) and was shared by the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army Air Corps. The U.S. Navy leased 1135.28 acres from the County of Kern on 24 May 1943 through lease # W-2972-eng-1 129. The U.S. Army Air Corps now known as the U.S. Air Force acquired 184.74 acres from four private owners. The DoD therefore acquired a total of 1,320.02 acres and the entire area was known as Inyokern Airfield. The U.S. Army Air Corps used 184.74 acres as an airfield known as Harvey Field from 13 August 1943 to 15 October 1952. The U.S. Navy used 1,135.28 acres as a temporary airfield known as the Naval Ordnance Test Site from 24 May 1943 to 15 October 1952. On 15 October 1952, Kern County deeded 44.75 acres to the U.S. Navy, who currently uses the property as a well field for China Lake Naval Weapons Center. Kern County also deeded 35.71 acres to various private firms for an industrial park. The remaining 1,239.56 acres was deeded to the Indian Wells Valley Airport District and is currently used as an airport known as Inyokern Airport. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the Department of Defense and is therefore eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program-Formerly Used Defense Sites established under 10 USC 2701 et seq.

County Landing Field226.00TehachapiThe Department of Defense (DOD) is not known to have acquired nor have had any controlling interest in this 226 acre site. Since the establishment of a landing field at the site in 1927 and acquisition by Kern County in 1938, Tehachapi Airport has been privately or publicly owned and operated. There is anecdotal evidence that Tehachapi Airport was used ,during World War II by the Army Air Corps as an alternative landing field when fog closed Minter Field. There is written evidence that the Army Air Forces had expressed an interest in 1941 in using all airfields and airports in the Kern County system. In the period after World War II, there is anecdotal evidence for ad hoc use as an alternative landing field by the Marine Corps Air Station in Mojave, and for limited use for refueling military planes during the cold war period. Neither the Army Air Corps nor the Marine Corps made any improvements to the site. Two underground storage tanks which were installed for refueling unspecified military planes in 1978 have been removed.
