Fort Mcdowell640.00Angel IslandOn 6 November 1850, the US Government acquired 737.89 acres from the State of CA. The site was known as Fort McDowell, Fort McDowell East Garrison, Fort McDowell North Garrison, Fort McDowell West Garrison, Camp Reynolds, Angel Island Military Reservation, Overseas Discharge and Replacement Depot, Angel Island (San Franciso) Immigration Station, and Fort McDowell (San Francisco) Port of Embarkation. The site was used by the US Army as a discharge and replacement depot and as an installation for San Francisco harbor defenses. Improvements included an ammunition dump, a tower, a gasoline station, storehouses, officer's quarters, recreational building, lighthouses, power lines, hospitals, quarantine station, underground storage tanks, aboveground storage tanks, a Nike missile site, gun batteries, electrical substations, and barracks. On 20 June 1947, 737.89 acres were assumed by the War Assets Administration. On 10 March 1954, the US Government granted 36.82 acres to the State of CA, which included a historic monument use restriction for 20 years. On 10 December 1958, the US Government granted another 183.83 acres to the State of CA with a 25-year historic monument use restriction. On 11 March 1963, the US Government granted 517.24 acres to the State of CA with an in perpetuity historic monument use restriction. The total acreage granted was 737.89.
San Francisco Nike Battery 91595.50Angel IslandSan Francisco Defense Area Nike Battery 91 has a total acreage of 595.50 acres acquired by direct transfer from the DOI by letter of permit on February 5, 1954. The site consisted of a Launcher Area and IFC Area. No Facility Area was constructed and the property was relinquished back to the DOI on October 9, 1960. Based on the foregoing finding, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is therefore eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
Bolinas Military Reservation13.87BolinasIn 1942, the War Department acquired 7.30 fee acres, 4.04 easement acres, and 2.53 license acres from private individuals and RCA Communications, Inc. The site was used to provide aximuths for the harbor defense guns. On 19 June 1945, 0.97 easement acre quitclaimed to Amedeo Garzoli. On 22 May 1959, 12.90 acres were turned over to the GSA, who in turn quitclaimed 7.30 fee acres and 1.68 easement acres to Fred Woods on 15 June 1960; 1.39 easement acres quitclaimed to RCA Communitcations, Inc. on 1 June 1960; and, terminated 2.53 license acres effective 20 April 1960. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
Point Reyes Lighthouse1.00InvernessOn 7 May 1943, the U.S. acquired 1.00 permit acre from the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of the Navy. The site was used by the Navy to construct hutments. On 26 September 1952, the property was relinquished to the Department of the Treasury. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environemental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
Point Reyes Datum Point & Access Road8.91InvernessOn 17 April 1943, the U.S. acquired 8.91 easement acres from Joseph Mendoza. The site was used by the U.S. Navy as an access road right of way to Datum Point. On 06 June 1952, the property was transferred to the Department of the Treasury. DURING WORLD WAR II, THE FORMER CAMP HYDE MANUEVER AREA PERFORMED TARGET PRATICE AGAINIST TOWED TARGETS IN DRAKES BAY OUT PAST CHIMNEY ROCK AND MONITORED BOMB ACCTURACY IN DRAKES BAY. THIS SITE CONSISTS OF 10,532 ACRES.

Frank Valley Military Reservation9.18Marin CityFrank Valley Military Reservation is in Marin County approximately 22 miles northwest of SF, CA. Approximately 8.93 Fee acres and .25 Easement acres were acquired prior to 01 July 1940. An additional .39 Lesser Interest acre was acquired after 1 July 1940. The total acreage acquired was 9.57. The site was known as Frank Valley Military Reservation; and Frank Valley Fire Control Site and was used as a fire control site by the Bureau of 9th Corps Area. Available records indicate that improvements included three underground fire control stations, a reinforced concrete powerhouse, and a reinforced concrete mine station. The mine station was used as a control node for offshore/bay mines. On 31 October 1951, 9.57 acres were transferred to Department of the Navy, but were later deleted from transfer to the Dept. of the Navy by letter from the Secretary of the Army on 28 November 1952. By quitclaim deed dated 06 Oct. 1960, General Services Administration conveyed 9.57 acres to the County of Marin. According to the assessor's roll as of the date of this report, the US owns this site.
Black Point Communications Facility Annex135.64NovatoA total of 135.64 acres was obtained by the U.S. Government through a series of eminent domain actions including 27.00 acres obtained on 17 May 1939 and 108.64 acres obtained on 30 October 1959. The site was situated within the limits of the City of Novato in Marin County, CA; approximately 1/2 mile south of Highway 101 on Renaissance Lane. The site was used as an antenna field by the Air Force. Improvements included four concrete block buildings, one small wood building, six small sheds, nine oil-filled transformers, one oil-filled glass electrical component, two propane tanks, one concrete water cistern, one underground storage tank, one above ground tank, one abandoned above ground tank support, a trailer, a pump station, and an array of antennas. On 29 November 1982, 135.64 acres were quitclaimed to the State of California Lands Commission. The quitclaim document specifies that no restoration is required. Based on the foregoing findings of fact, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the Department of Defense and is therefore eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program- Formerly Used Defense Sites established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
Hamilton Army Airfield1600.00NovatoIn 1932, Marin County sold approximately 2,000 acres to the federal government. The site was known as Hamilton Army Airfield and began operations in December 1932 as a base for fighter, bomber and transportation aircraft. In 1946, the government purchased 49 acres for the construction of the Rifle Range and the Pistol and Night Firing Range. The site was transferred to the newly created U.S. Air Force in 1947 and was renamed Hamilton Air Force Base. In 1959, an additional 218 acres were acquired for the construction and operation of the North Antenna Field (NAF). Numerous disposals and transfers to other Government agencies occurred between 30 March 1961 and 1 October 1983. On 1 October 1983, 755 fee-acres were transferred to the Department of the Army. Of this acreage GSA disposed of 87.05 acres, known as Phase I, Tract 1, on 26 June 1995. The GSA also disposed of 27.26 acres, known as Phase 1, Tract 2, on 26 August 1996. Phase II, consisting of the remaining acreage to be disposed of, was transferred to the City of Novato in 1999. Both GSA Phases were developed for commercial and residential use. The site is currently occupied by Navy and Lanham housing developments, Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) property, the Novato School District, the U.S. Coast Guard, residential housing, industrial and commercial businesses, and the California Coastal Commission land consisting of coastal salt marshes. Based on the foregoing gindings of fact, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the Department of Defense (DoD). Therefore, it is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites established under 10 USC 2701 et seq.
Hamilton Army Airfield Phase Ii In House180.60NovatoThe Phase II parcels, totaling 180.6 acres, were acquired before 1 July 1940. The parcels were part of Hamilton Army Airfield (Air Force Base) which some portions are still used currently. The Phase II Parcel was transferred by the Army to the City of Novato in 1999 for development. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.

Wildcat Military Reservation201.09OlemaOn 26 July 1950, 8.344 easement acres were quitclaimed to Grace Hamilton Kelham. On 31 May 1951, 33.863 easement acres and 3.69 fee acres were scheduled to transfer to the Navy; however, the transfer did not take plae and the total 37.553 acres were reported excess to General Services Administration. On 30 June 1953, 155.20 lease acres were terminated. On 16 August 1961, 3.69 fee acres were conveyed to G.H. Kelham. On 02 October 1961, 33.863 easement acres reverted to the former owners. Records did not indicate if restoration was required or if the lease property was recapturable.
Mill Valley Afb285.58Potrero MeadowsBetween 1951 and 1981, the U.S. Government leased 252.56 acres of land from the Marin County Water District and had a permit for 24.40 acres of land from the State of California. The site was known as the Mill Valley Air Force Station Military Reservation and was designated as headquarters for the San Francisco North American Defense (NORAD) Control Center, composed of both Army and Air Force personnel and equipment. It was used as a radar station on top of Mount Tamalpais. Prior to May 1981, 146.16 lease acres and 24.40 permit acres were terminated. On 3 March 1983, General Administration Services transferred 2.84 leased acres to the Federal Aviation Administration. On 10 March 1983, the National Park Service assumed accountability of 102.64 leased acres and on 10 August 1983, 0.92 leased acres were transferred to the Department of the Army. Current owner of all leased acreage is Marin County Water District. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 USC 2701 et seq.

San Francisco Nike Battery 9371.67San RafaelNike Battery 93 consists of 71.67 acres and was used by the Army Anti-Aircraft Command for the assembly, launching, and control of guided missiles for defense against hostile aircraft. The fee land, easements, and improvements associated with Nike 93 were declared excess to the General Services Administration (GSA) on November 8, 1971. Currently, the Facility Area is used by the Marin County Sheriff's Department. The 3 magazines in the Launcher Area is now owned by Marin County and used by the Marin Municipal Water District. The IFC Area is now the Harry A. Barbier Memorial Park. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD. Therefore, it is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.

The property was used for additional housing for Hamilton Field. On 15 June 1946, the lease for 53.00 acres was terminated and on 15 May 1946, the no area easement was terminated. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environemental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
Fort Cronkhite1029.82SausalitoBetween October 1952 and October 1972, the Army transfered portions of the property to the U.S. Navy , the Coast Guard, the Department of the Interior (National Parks Service), and to the Gulf Oil Corporation.
Fort Baker1464.43SausalitoOn 24 July 1866, approximately 1,068.83 fee acres were conveyed to the U.S. On 8 March 1897, the State of California ceded approximately 395.60 acres, to the U.S., of tidelands adjacent and contiguous to the original reservation. The Reservation was divided into two forts by General Order in 1904, Fort Barry and Fort Baker. The site was used by the Sixth U.S. Army as a sub-installation of the Presidio of San Francisco. On 23 March 1959, 128.90 fee acres were reported excess to the GSA who then conveyed the property to the State of CA by quitclaim deed on 15 August 1961. On 1 November 1967, 180.00 fee acres were conveyed to the State of CA by quitclaim deed, reserving an easement of approximately 4.22 acres for the U.S. Coast Guard. 193 acres of tidelands reverted to the state when the above 180 acres were transferred. By letters dated 14 September 1965 and 27 October 1972, 0.42 fee acres and 412.00 fee acres were transferred to the Department of the Treasury, U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of the Interior, National Park Service. The Department of the Army has a use permit for the exclusive use of 6.00 acres and joint use of 5.05 acres for Fort Baker. A letter dated 27 November 1959 transferred 18.56 acres to the Department of the Navy which were then reacquired by letter dated 15 March 1963. The total acreage left for the U.S. is 550.53 acres of which 543.11 fee arcres are for the Department of the Army use for Fort Baker. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
Fort Barry1335.52SausalitoFort Barry was acquired by the U.S. Government from Samuel R. Throckmorton on 24 July 1866 and from the State of California on 8 March 1897, totalling 1,335.52 acres. In November and December, 1965, the U.S. Coast Guard acquired 231 acres and 22 acres, respectively. On 1 November 1967, 271 acres of Fort Barry were conveyed to the State of California. Public Law 92-589 transferred 1712.11 acres, Fort Barry, to the DOI for purposes of the Law. The site was used as an AAA Nike site by the U.S. Army. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
Tiburon Naval Net Depot50.00TiburonOn 30 June 1904, the U.S. acquired fee title to 50 acres by a deed from the Lynde and Hough Company for the Naval Coal Depot. Multiple government agencies and private parties have occupied the site or portions of the site, including the Navy, the State of California, the John A. Roebling's Sons Company, and the San Francisco State University (a parcel of surplus land was officially transferred to the University). On 03 April 1978, the government quitclaimed 35 acres to the Board of Trustees of the California State University and Colleges. It has been determined that 10.043 acres are still owned by the U.S. Government and 4.957 acres are owned by the County of Marin at the former Naval Net Depot. Based on the foregoing, the 39.957 acres of the site not currently owned by the U.S. have been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and are eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
