Merced Auxiliary Field Mariposa62.19MariposaIn 1942 the United States acquired a total of 62.194 acres in lease, including 60.442 acres from the County of Mariposa, 0.364 acre from John Marre, and 1.388 acres from Richard and Willa May Morrissey. The Army Air Force used the site as an emergency landing field and as an auxiliary to Merced Army Air Field. The property leased from private parties was for access to nearby Mount Bullion Peak where there was a radio beacon on property that was already under Government ownership (Bureau of Land Management). All leases were terminated in 1945. Control and operation of the airport was returned to Mariposa County. Based on the foregoing findings of fact, Merced Auxiliary Field, Mariposa (Mt. Bullion Airport), has been determined to be formerly used by the Department of Defense (DOD). Therefore, it is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et.
