| Central Sierra Snow Laboratory | 1020.40 | Soda Springs | On 19 Jan. 1948, the Dept. of Army acquired 1020.40 acres by Use Permit from the Dept. of Agriculture, and a total 1633.20 lease acres from several private property owners including J. Sherrit and D.A. Linn (923 acres), Southern Pacific Land Company (650.10 acres), the Sierra Club (60 acres) and the Donner Summit Company, Inc. (0.10) acre. Total acreage acquired was 2653.60. The site was also known as Castle Creek Drainage of the Tahoe National Forest; Central Sierra Snow Laboratory Project; and, Central Sierra Snow Laboratory Project Castle Creek Snow Project. The site was used by the Dept. of the Army as a snow research area. Improvements to the site included an office building, laboratory, bunkhouse, garage and a workshop. On 17 November 1955, the 1633.10 lease acres were retransferred to the Dept. of Agriculture from the Dept. of Army. The 1020.40 permit acres were retransferred to the Dept. of Agriculture on 4 April 1956. The remaining .10 lease acre was terminated on 31 Aug. 1955. The site is currently operated by the Snow Zone Hydrology Research Work Unit of the Forest Service, Dept. of Agriculture. |
