Mussel Rock Military Reservation6.19DalyPrior to 1940, the original military reservation was 2.65 acres of land (1.48 acres in fee and 1.17 acres in easement). A 0.20 of an acre easement, acquired prior to 1 July 1940, was merged in the fee acquisition of Tract No. 1, thus reducing the total acquisition to 2.45 acres of land. Subsequent to 1940, 3.74 acres of land was acquired (2.54 acres in fee and 1.20 acres in leasehold). The total land acquired for the site was 6.19 acres. The site was located nine miles of SF, in San Mateo County, CA. The site was utilized by the US Army as a fire control station for the San Francisco Harbor Defense. The site was also referred to as Mussel Rock Fire Control Station (H.D. of SF); Mussel Rock F.C. Station (Harbor Defense of SF); and Mussel Rock Military Reservation. Between 1941 and 1943, three permanent underground concrete structures were built; namely, a power plant room and two base end stations. On 8 Sep. 1947, the War Assets Administaration assumed accountability for 1.55 fee acres of land. On 12 Sep. 1958, 3.44 acres of land was reported excess to the General Services Administaratin (GSA). In 1960, GSA conveyed the 3.44 acres of land by two quitclaim deeds. There was no record of the 1.20 acres leasehold. Records show that 3.564 acres were inspected and policed for the removal or demolition of duds and other unexploded ammunition. The site is currently owned by City of Daly.

Camp Montara135.00Half Moon BayOn 26 January 1943, the War Department acquired 135.00 leased acres from McNee Company and 22.60 leased acres from Hibernia Savings and Loan Society. The site was used as a radar site for the Army Air Base. Both leases were terminated in November 1947. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
Camp Miramar6298.00Half Moon BayOn 21 April 1943, the War Department leased a total of 6.298 acres from various property owners and a no area permit was issued from the State of California Division of Highways for installation of water and sewer lines. The site was known as Miramar Lake, Miramar Hotel and Miramar School, and Camp Miramar, San Mateo County, CA. The site was used as a campsite in the 6th Army area. Several buildingswere constructed on the site. The leases were terminated between September and December 1944 and the permit was terminated on 6 May 1952. There is no information regarding restoration of the site. Based on the foregoing findings of fact, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the Department of Defense (DoD). Therefore, it is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
Half Moon Bay Radar L-8239.18Half Moon BayPrior to 1943 the US Government acquired 3.891 permit acres and 35.297 lease acres. Total acreage acquired for the subject site was 39.188. The site was known as VHF Site 4K5 Half Moon Bay, VHF (Radar) site 4K5 (Half Moon Bay); and VHF Site 4K5, CA. The site was situated in San Mateo County, one and one-half miles south of Half Moon Bay. The site was used by the Air Force as a radar site. Improvements included two concrete buildings, a concrete radar tower base, an abandoned aboveground tank support and an underground storage tank. Lease acres were terminated as follows: 6.951 lease acres terminated on 15 Aug. 1948, 0.138 lease acres terminated 31 October 1948, 0.138 lease acres terminated 4 April 1949, 6.80 lease acres terminated 31 May 1952, 15.37 lease acres terminated 30 June 1952, 5.90 lease acres terminated 27 Octover 1952. Permit acres were terminated as follows: 1.65 license acres terminated 31 July 1949, 0.014 license acres terminated 3 December 1952, 0.027 license acres terminated 20 Dec. 1952, .060 license acres terminated 25 Dec. 1952, and 2.14 license acres terminated 3 Feb. 1953.
Half Moon Bay Flight Strip340.22Half Moon BayBy authorization dated 15 October 1942, the War Department acquired 217.68 acres by fee, 11.78 by lease, and 110.76 by transfer. The total number of acres was 340.22. In addition, 47 "no area" glide angle permits were obtained under license agreement. The site was known as Half Moon Bay Flight Strip, San Mateo County, CA. The site was used by the Dept. of the Army as a flight strip and associated glide angle clearance and sewer line right of way. Improvements included a flight strip, barracks, hangers, two underground fuel tanks, seven concrete fuel pump pits and two concrete sumps. The leased acres were terminated from 27 June to 13 July 1944, 110.76 acres were retransferred to Federal Works Agency on 12 April 1946, and 217.68 acres were excessed to the War Assets Administration on 4 Feb. 1947.
Dibble General Hospital140.09Menlo ParkOn 3 January 1943, the War Department acquired 128.15 fee acres from Wells Fargo Bank & Union Trust Co and 11.94 lease acres from Claude Lindsay. The site was used as a 2,700 bed veterans hospital. On 31 October 1945, 7.52 lease acres were terminated, returning the land to Mr. Lindsay. On 31 July 146, 127.27 fee acres and 4.42 lease acres were turned over to the Federal Public Housing Authority (FPHA), who returned the 4.42 lease acres to the owner. On 5 August 1946, 0.88 fee acre was turned over to the War Assets Administration (WAA). On 7 May 1947, the FPHA conveyed 41.607 fee acres to the WAA. The remaining 85.644 were retained by the FPHA. Between 21 November 1947 and 19 April 1949, the WAA quitclaimed 42.533 acres (it only had 42.487 to dispose of) to various entities. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.

San Francisco Nike Battery 51 Milagra Ridge330.10PacificaIn 1942, the U.S. acquired 327.97 fee acres, 0.58 license acres, and 1.46 easement acres for the Milagra Ridge Military Reservation. The U.S. Army Air Defense Command used the site as a Nike Missile site, fire control fog station, and a launcher and administrative area of Nike Site SF-51. Between 11 July 1946 and 10 May 1962, 73.11 acres were disposed of. In 1972, 36.48 acres were declared excess and transferred to the Department of the Interior which then transferred the property to the City of Pacifica in May 1974. The 73.11 acres disposed of in 1962 are currently privately held. The U.S. retained 220.42 acres. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the Department of Defense and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
San Francisco Nike Battery 51 Sweeney Ridge14.12PacificaThe site is located seven miles west of San Bruno in the town of Pacifica, California. In 1954 through 1958, the government acquired 9.92 lease acres from the Consumer Ice Company and 4.2 easement acres from the Presiding Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a private owner on 23 July 1970 and 3 November 1969, respectively. The site was used for the assembly, launching, and control of guided missiles. According to the license, the government agreed to remove Department of Defense (DoD)-installed installations and appurtances and to restore the premises to near-original conditions. On 17 October 1974, .44 acre was terminated and another .56 acre was terminated on 22 June 1959. The 4.2 easement acres were reported excess on 14 July 1975. The lease for the 8.92 acres expired on 17 October 1974 and reverted to Texas International, et al. The lessor waived all claims for the restoration of the property, however settlement of restoration was included in the litigation. The Department of Interior, Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) acquired the 8.92 acres on 15 February 1984 from the Texas International Company. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DoD and is therefore eligible for the Department of Environmental Restoration, Formerly Used Defense Sites Program established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
Pillar Point Military Reservation48.96PrincetonOn 10 October 1940, the U.S. Army purchased 12.68 acres and leased 36.28 acres, totalling 48.96 acres. The site was used as a harbor defense facility and primary artillery site for the City of San Francisco. On 30 November 1949, the lease on 34.17 acres terminated. On 30 June 1953, the lease on 1.06 acres terminated On 04 September 1959, the lease on 1.05 acres terminated and the 12.68 fee acres were transferred to the Department of the Navy. The Navy leased the 36.28 acres again in 1959 for a radar facility. In the early 1960s, the 12.68 fee acres were transferred to the U.S. Air Force for a missile tracking installation. Seven of the acres not owned by the U.S. Air Force are not currently being used in the installation and four of the seven acres are owned by San Mateo Harbor District. Based on the foregoing, seven of the total 48.96 acres have been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environemental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.

Camp Tanforan118.00San BrunoIn April 1942, 118.00 leased acres were acquired from the Tanforan Company, Ltd and a "no area" license was acquired from the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. The site was used by the Navy before it was transferred to the Army as a Japanese reception center. The 118.00 leased acres were retransferred to the Department of the Navy on 1 March 1944. The lease was terminated on 10 October 1946. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.

Thornton Beach Military Reservation14.50San FranciscoThornton Beach Military Reservation was established in 1942, consisting of 14.5 permit acres, a no area encroachment permit, and a no acre license. The site was used for harbor defense and as a maneuver area. In 1943, the 14.5 acres were terminated. In 1953, the no area permit and no area license were terminated. The site is now owned by the State of CA State Parks. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by the DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.

San Francisco Trans-oceanic Receiver Station Site331.40San FranciscoIn 1942, the United States of America transferred 331.40 acres of land by a use permit that was used in lieu of a formal directive. The site was owned by the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) and the War Department was authorized to utilize the site fo military purposes. On February 16, 1947, the total 331.40 acre-site was retransferred to the CAA. Based on the foregoing, the site has been determined to be formerly used by DOD and is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
Granada Cantonment Area17.93San MateoPrior to June 1943, the U.S. Government acquired 11.790 lease acres (the historical file does not list this acreage, however, they were listed on the real estate map), 4.030 permit acres, and 2.113 license acres. Total acreage acquired for the subject site was 17.933. The site was known as Granada Cantonment Area Military Reservation; and El Granada Sub-Division, CA. The site was situated in San Mateo County, 16 miles south of the City of San Francisco, and used for housing of troops. Records do not indicate if there were any improvements. In 1949, 17.933 acres were terminated. Records did not indicate if restoration was required.
