Naval Direction Finder50.00Point ArguelloThe Navy constructed a direction finder station, which provided bearings for navigation of ships in the vicinity of Point Arguello. Navy improvements consisted of a fog signal tower, a radio beacon tower, a radio direction finder house, an operating building, various storage buildings, a transformer building, a pump house, two garages, and an underground fuel storage tank. The U.S. Army may have constructed a mechanical weather station at the site.

Of the 110 buildings and more then 220 underground storage tanks originally constructed and installed on the site, three buildings and 106 underground storage tanks remain. Two of the buildings are actively used as hangers and the other building is partially dismantled. There are 94 heating oil tanks (250-500 gallon capacity) and 12 gasoline and lubrication oil tanks (4 - 12,000 gallons, 6 - 25,000 gallons, and 2  50,000 gallons). Some of the tanks contain just residue while others still contain liquid. Only the underground tanks are recommended for removal. Sampling and testing will be performed at the time of tank removal. There is no visual evidence of contamination that could endanger persons using the airport.
